Navy commissions deployment in the East

The Sri Lankan Navy commissioned its naval deployment in Pulmoddai in the Eastern Province as SLNS Ranweli on 1 October. According to naval traditions, Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, Vice Admiral Jayanath Colombage handed over the Commissioning Warrant to the Commanding Officer of SLNS Ranweli, Captain P.S. De Silva. The naval deployment, first established on the premises of the Ceylon Mineral Sands Corporation in 2008 was shifted to the present location in 2011 and renamed as ND Pulmoddai on 17 September 2012. Initially the deployment was tasked with providing security to the residents engaged in fisheries industry and animal husbandry as well as safe guarding the adjoining seas. Currently, nine naval detachments function under the purview of the commissioned naval base.
