The Sri Lanka Navy yesterday assisted four distressed Indian fishermen in a fishing trawler drifting in Sri Lankan waters due to an engine failure.

A Sri Lanka Navy patrol craft, attached to the Northern Naval Command, in the early hours of yesterday had spotted the trawler that had experienced engine failure while in the seas 8.5 nautical miles north of Delft.

The Navy provided the fishermen - exhausted due to the ordeal they suffered in the prevailing rough sea conditions - with meals and refreshments while the Navy’s technical staff provided technical assistance to resolve the engine trouble.

Sri Lanka Navy has informed the Indian High Commission of the incident and a Sri Lanka Navy craft on patrol in the area has been directed to monitor the trawler.
