New Buddhist council to formulate national plan to end religious tension

A newly-formed Buddhist council says it will formulate a national plan to end religious tension in the country.
The Dhammadeepa Council led by the Chief Prelates (Mahanayakes) of the three Chapters (Nikayas) and the Custodian (Diyawadana Nilame) of the Sri Dalada Maligawa has said a national plan to end religious tension in the country is currently being formulated by the Council.
Council member Ven. Omalpe Sobitha Thero told the media that the national plan would be formulated in a manner that was favourable to all religious groups.
The Thero explained that the Council would initiate a nationwide programme to stop immoral, fraudulent and various forms of terrorist activities which had created social unrest and noted that the answers to the current problems should come from the religious leaders in the country.
“The answers to these problems should not come from the Government or from politicians but by religious leaders including the Buddhist clergy who have a responsibility to address such issues,” he said.
According to Ven. Sobitha Thero, the Council has already informed the Government of the necessity to create a conducive environment to bring Christian, Islamic, Hindu leaders together to address what had become a national concern.
