New envoys pledge continued support to Sri Lanka, keen on strengthening ties

Six new ambassadors to Sri Lanka presented their credentials to President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday. The new diplomats assuming duties were Ambassador of Congo Felix Ngoma (Resident – New Delhi), Ambassador of Argentina Raul Ignacio Guastavino (Resident – New Delhi), Ambassador of the Republic of Korea Chang Won-sam, Ambassador of Philippines Vicente Vivencio T. Bandillo (Resident – Dhaka), Ambassador of Palestine Zuhair Hamdallah Zaid, and Ambassador of El Salvador Guillermo Rubio Funes (Resident - New Delhi). During the discussion with President Rajapaksa that followed the credentials ceremony, the Ambassadors conveyed messages of good wishes from their respective heads of state to President Rajapaksa as well as to the Sri Lankan people and pledged to work towards further strengthening bilateral ties, President’s Media Unit said in a statement. “Congo will continue to support the Government of Sri Lanka in the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva,” Ngomo told the President. Argentina’s Ambassador Guastavino said his objective during his tenure is to develop new areas of cooperation, especially in trade. Won-sam from Korea told the President he had three specific goals towards enhancing bilateral relations between the two nations: to further consolidate the foundations of bilateral relations; to boost trade and investment; and to expand relations into new areas. President Rajapaksa briefed the new ambassadors of post-war developments in Sri Lanka and requested them to travel in Sri Lanka, speak to people from various sectors, learn the true ground reality and report the truth about Sri Lanka back to their countries. Deputy Minister of External Affairs Neomal Perera, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga and Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs Kshenuka Seneviratne were also present.
