A new water supply project in Matara District was vested with the public recently under the patronage of Town Planning and Water Resources Minister Rauff Hakeem.

Ministers Mangala Samaraweera and Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena and State Minister Sudarshini Fernandopulle also participated in the occasion.

The new project will improve water supply to consumers of low water pressure areas, network expansion and construction of a salinity barrier.

The project is significant since it was implemented targeting the expected increase in population by the year 2046.

Under the project 16,000 cubic meters of water obtained from the Nil Wala River can be purified daily in the fourth phase.

In conjunction with the project a salinity barrier is being constructed with the objective to prevent sea water mixing with the river water during water shortages.
