The Ministry of Justice has initiated an innovative web-based tracking system for the Attorney General’s Department developed by the University of Colombo -School of Computing (UCSC) with the financial and technical support from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Speaking at the launch event, Minister of Justice Rauff Hakeem said the lack of case tracking systems inevitably lead to delays in the processing of cases, resulting in the secondary victimisation of children who had already been subjected to abuse. The new initiative will transform the current manual process into an automated web-based system that will allow for tracking and processing of a considerable number of pending cases related to children. The lack of an automated system has resulted in setbacks in the administration of justice and availability of statistics and qualitative data pertaining to children. Commending the new project, Attorney General Palitha Fernando said: “This project allows us to establish a data collection system and will help improve our judicial process especially for children.” UNICEF Sri Lanka Representative Una McCauley said: “We are proud to partner with the Ministry of Justice and the Attorney General’s Department to bring innovative approaches to help speed up justice for children.” The web-based system will allow for the tracking and monitoring of the progress of cases relating to child abuse within the Criminal Justice process.
