National Freedom Front (NFF) yesterday criticised the National Executive Council (NEC) saying that they have no authority to call for the arrest of former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa or any other person while stating that the Government is releasing Tamil activists while conspiring to arrest war heroes. NFF Spokesman Mohamed Muzammil told a press conference yesterday, “Only the Police can decide whether to arrest a person or not. A person could also be arrested following a Court Order. It appears the Executive Council has become a ‘Hunting Council’.” Commenting further he expressed that the new Government is preparing to arrest people who contributed to the military defeat against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) while releasing Tamil activists. “The new Government releases Tamil activists. They grant bail to Tamil Tigers. In the meantime, they are conspiring to arrest the war heroes who oversaw the war. This is disappointing,” said Muzammil. It was reported that the NEC when it met on Wednesday had decided to arrest former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa in connection with the floating armoury of Avant Guarde.
