Our Lobby Correspondent The Opposition sought Government intervention on Thursday to defuse the growing tension inside Homagama Mahinda Rajapaksa Vidyalaya and ensure the safety of students. Opposition Leader Nimal Siripla de Silva said: “For the last four years this school was functioning well. However, political intervention and the change of school operating hours have led to this unfortunate situation. Students got beaten by the Principal and were hospitalised. People clad in black roam around inside the school, according to parents,” MP de Silva reported. However, Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, who disputed that there was any violence within Homagama Mahinda Rajapaksa Vidyalaya, assured the House that everything was normal at the school. “The Government gives the same recognition to all national schools and this particular school is no exception. As a result, the time the school closes has changed to 1.30 p.m., making room for extracurricular activities to take place after school. A petition signed by 124 teachers of this school was received by me and was instrumental in this decision,” Minister Kariyawasam said. “On 29 January an incident took place at the school and a police inquiry was conducted. Currently the school is back to normal. The teachers or students are not facing any security issues or threats,”
