The Lalith Athulathmudali Memorial Oration on “The Emerging Doctrine of the ‘Responsibility to Protect’ and the nature of the United Nations” will be delivered by well-known diplomat and UN Advisor Nirupam Sen, who was also a former Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka on January 29, at the BMICH Committee Room A at 6.00 p.m.
The Memorial Oration has been organized by the Lalith Athulathmudali Foundation.
Athulathmudali is considered one of the most distinguished Sri Lankan statesmen in recent history and is remembered by many as one of the few well educated politicians of that era. One of his major contributions to education includes the establishment of the Mahapola Fund to provide scholarships to needy students.
Sen who was from the Indian Foreign Service has held many prestigious positions before retirement including that of Permanent Representative of India to the UN. After retirement he was appointed Special Senior Advisor to the President of the UN General Assembly.
