University Grants Commission (UGC) has informed the Supreme Court yesterday that admissions to state universities in the country would not take place until the Z-scores of last year’s GCE Advanced level examination are finalised.

The UGC made the disclosure to the Supreme Court of its resolve when a Fundamental Rights petition filed by a group of 33 students was taken up before a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake.

The lawyer representing the respondents has said that a solution for the Z-score issue is currently being worked out.

The petition is to be taken up for hearing again on 30 August.  Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister of Higher Education Nandimithra Ekanayake said the government is committed to grant justice to all students affected by the Z-score issue.

According to the Deputy Minister, the Government is considering admitting students to universities under two batches.
