By Dharisha Bastians The Elections Commission will withhold candidate cards from any provincial election nominees who fail to declare their assets and liabilities ahead of an extended 7 September deadline, Polls Chief Mahinda Deshapriya warned yesterday. The Commissioner of Elections who recently concluded a tour of the provinces that will poll on 21 September, told the Daily FT his Department would deny any candidate that fails to declare assets the card that will authorise them to contest the elections. “We have made a decision on that,” the Polls Chief said, adding that the Department had decided to extend the original 30 August deadline to 7 September to allow more time to comply with regulations. Deshapriya said about 90% of candidates from the major parties contesting have already submitted their declaration forms. “Of the independent and what we call ‘non-serious’ parties, only about 10% of the candidates have submitted,” he explained.
