The main opposition United National Party (UNP) has urged the government to regain Sri Lanka’s lost image. UNP MP Gayantha Karunathilaka told reporters at Sirikotha that the government must stop spending lavishly for the Commonwealth Summit next month in an attempt to gain popularity locally. He recalled that some countries are on the fence over the level of their participation at the summit while Canada has already confirmed it will boycott the key event. Meanwhile Karunathilaka said the UNP is yet to receive a formal invitation for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. He said that even UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has not received a formal invitation for the event. Karunathilaka said that on a personal level some government officials had telephoned the UNP and inquired if the party will attend the summit to send the invites but so far formal invites have not been sent to the party.
