The main opposition United National Party (UNP) yesterday brought a no-confidence motion against Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister A.L.M. Athaulla.
The motion signed by 10 UNP parliamentarians had been handed over to the Secretary General of Parliament today, Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga said.
The UNP last week announced that Athaulla had misled the parliament by saying that elections to all local government bodies would be held in March when in reality, the government had decided to postpone elections to several local bodies.
Amaratunga has said the no-confidence motion was handed in against the failure of Minister Athaulla to properly handle the local government elections.
