No plan to manage garbage in Colombo: PHU

The Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) yesterday claimed roads in Colombo were flooded because the Megapolis and Western Development Ministry has failed to manage the garbage issue of the area.

Speaking to reporters PHU Leader Udaya Gammanpila alleged the ministry was unable to dispose of the garbage dumped on roads in Colombo and it has caused the minor flood situation. “Garbage has blocked all water streams and drainage in the area. In a case of heavy rains roads are filled with water. It creates traffic too,” he said. Praising the past regime’s garbage management system directed by former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the Urban Development Authority (UDA), Gammanpila said that time was a golden era of urban beautification. “Defence Secretary Rajapaksa launched a special garbage disposal system under the UDA in urban areas. It helped to overcome several issues such as the spread of dengue and water levels rising. The present Government does not have a specific practice to keep the city clean,” he charged.

Gammanpila demanded the Megapolis Minister  implement a sound garbage management system in Colombo instead of talking about the Megapolis concept all the time. (CG)
