When President Mahinda Rajapaksa is making a relentless effort to improve the conditions of our country, it is an unfortunate matter to see that the opposition is involved in ‘Third Class’ Politics, said the District of Kandy Member of Parliament and Senkadagala SLFP Chief Organiser Dilum Amunugama. Amunugama said this when he addressed a group of the Maha Sanga at his Nugawela Political Office.

Further addressing the Maha Sanga he also stated that the efforts of the opposition are directed to push the country backwards. From what ever angle the problem is viewed the efforts of the President to ensure peace and stability in the country, should not be under-rated under any circumstances. In that context it is necessary to point out that the President has given leadership to those endeavours. Such efforts to under estimate the contributions of the President will be made only by persons afflicted with the mentality of jealousy and dishonesty. In those days when the country was faced with terrorism, one did not know whether the person who left his home would even return back. It was an era of fear, of scepticism and death threats, where the sole prayer of the Nation was to defeat terrorism and usher in peace and tranquility. That national prayer became a reality when the President made a revolution to uplift the conditions of the people and the country. However, when the President is making those efforts, the opposition is attempting to turn back the clock and hamper the progress of the country. Be that as it may, it is just child’s play for the President who defeated the world’s gruesome terrorists, to defeat the Third Class Politics of the opposition.

Our President is a person who solves problems after investigating the causes for such problems. He has the courage to face the public. He is one who looks into the needs of the people. He meets the people at various fora. He conducts mobile services. He reviews complaints emanating from the public. He ascertains the weaknesses in our public service. The only leader in our country who moves with the people is Mahinda Rajapaksa. In this era there will be no one from the opposition who can throw a challenge to him. If the opposition has any such intention of coming to power it must necessarily follow a path of developing the country – like our President. But the opposition which has no leadership, which has no back-bone, which has no leadership, and which has no philosophy can never be transformed to any type of government.

One can engage one self in politics only by rendering services to the people, by listening to the grievances of the public and by providing opportunities for self criticism.

Under such circumstances only leaders will be born. In the present opposition far from having even a set of leaders, one does not see even the semblance of a leader. Our President’s intention is to safeguard and protect democracy by having a strong and virile opposition. Therefore, he has pledged to uphold the principles of democracy and stabilise them in the country. Our President’s efforts to develop the country economically, socially and culturally is applauded by the people because they have understood his genuine intentions. The public who are with us say that. It is also obvious from the immense success of the ‘Blue Waves’ blowing across the country.
