Opposition Leader R . Sampanthan yesterday commended Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake’s decision to step down from his post as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Speaking in Parliament, the Opposition Leader said MP Karunanayake has not yet been found guilty by any confident court and he was entitled to the presumption of innocence as it was his fundamental right.
“I commend that bold step. He has done so in the interest of good governance, in the interest of the people of this country and the interest of the country itself. He had set an example which many others could do well to follow,” the Opposition Leader said. He added that in the past few years there have been several charges of corruption against many but none of these have been dealt with and it is significant that a Minister in the present Government tendered his resignation today on the basis of certain charges against him which have not yet been proven.
