Opposition-led workers’ protests today

Opposition political parties have planned to summon more than 100,000 workers to Colombo today. The collective of Government, semi-Government and private sector trade unions is to stage a massive demonstration on 21 October in front of the Fort Railway Station in Colombo to make 17 demands including a Rs. 10,000 salary increase from the Government. Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has planned a protest march and a meeting in Colombo tomorrow with the participation of 350 trade unions linked to the party’s trade union arm National Trade Union Centre. The United National Party (UNP) will join a number of UNP affiliated and independent trade unions to hold a massive protest in Colombo today. Increase of salary of the public sector employees by Rs. 10,000, inclusion of all the allowances to the basic salary and increasing the salary of the private sector employees through a Parliamentary Act are the major demands of the trade unions.
