Opposition parties betrayed country by abstaining from voting on UN probe: NFF

Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) betrayed the country by abstaining from voting for the parliamentary motion against the UN probe. Speaking to media at a press conference the NFF spokesman and former MP Mohamed Muzammil condemned the two opposition parties for indirectly supporting the UN Human Rights Council mandated international investigation. The parliamentary motion was submitted by nine ruling party MPS against allowing a UN team to visit the country to conduct the probe into alleged human rights violations during only the last seven years of the 30-year long bloody war in Sri Lanka. The motion was approved by the parliament with a majority of 134 votes, with only 10 votes of the main Tamil party, Tamil National Alliance against it. The UNP and JVP abstained and the major Muslim party, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) boycotted the parliament to protest the recent communal clashes. The spokesman said the US and other western powers have manipulated the UN Security Council and the Human Rights Council to exploit other countries for their gains in the name of human rights. If one were to analyse the conduct of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights it is apparent that she also acted according to these Western powers siding with the Tamil terrorists group LTTE to bring down Sri Lanka, Muzammil said. The Western masters of LTTE couldn’t comprehend that Sri Lanka was able to defeat terrorism and bring peace and therefore they are now attempting to give a lifeline to the LTTE in the guise of human rights, the NFF spokesperson charged.
