Pakistani envoy wraps up visit to Eastern Province

The High Commissioner of Pakistan in Sri Lanka Maj Gen Qasim Qureshi recently completed a successful visit to the Eastern Province,.

The visit was aimed at understanding the ground situation in the Province and to explore opportunities to further develop economic, cultural and people-to-people links with that part of Sri Lanka.

During the visit, Qasim Qureshi met Governor of the Eastern Province, Rear Admiral Mohan Wijewickrama at Governor’s Secretariat and held detailed discussion on all areas of bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Pakistan including the assistance provided by the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka.

The High Commissioner also reviewed the progress of development projects sponsored by the Government of Pakistan through its High Commission in Colombo in the Eastern Province. These projects include educational scholarships as well as provision of clean drinking water supply projects to the Muslim, Sinhalese and Tamil communities of the Eastern Province.

The High Commissioner also participated in a meeting with the officials of the District Chamber of Commerce & Industry to review the prevailing business environment and to explore ways to further strengthen the trade and business links.

The High Commissioner met with the Chief Minister Eastern Province Najeeb Abdul Majeed and held detailed discussion.

Qasim Qureshi also visited the Pakistani Naval Ship SAIF which was on a good will visit to the Trincomalee port from 14-17 May 2013.

 The 123 meter long PNS SAIF (F-253) is a multi mission frigate capable of operating independently or as part of Task Force in multi-threat environment. PNS SAIF is equipped with state of the art robust, reliable and modern weapons and sensors. It also carries Anti Submarine Z9EC helicopter.

Qasim Qureshi also attended the dinner reception on board PNS Saif which was attended by large number participants from the cross section of society including Government Ministers, parliamentarians and senior officers from Sri Lankan Army, Navy and Air force. The Chief Minister Eastern Province Najeeb Abdul Majeed was the Chief Guest at the event.
