Parliament to start radio channel, boat services and rent out its car park

Parliament plans to a start new radio channel to broadcast its proceedings live, first time in history, speaker Chamal Rajapaksa told Asian Tribune.

The Speaker believes that all the parliamentarians will behave more responsibly as the live broadcasts begin.

In addition to that, Sri Lanka Navy will start a boat service in the surrounding “Diyawanna oya” for the benefit of the local and foreign tourists. It also plans to develop the nearby parliament car park as an entertainment zone with the collaboration of the Sri Lanka Police welfare unit.

 “This is the time to broadcast Parliament proceedings to the Sri Lankan people. Initially as a trial it is going to be a radio broadcast. At the moment we are discussing this matter with the several radio broadcasters. If they agree (most probably the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation) hopefully we can start the live converge before the end of this year,” speaker, Chamal Rajapaksa said.

 “The radio broadcast must not be a cost-burden to us. However, we need a separate radio channel (like Sri Lanka Parliament Radio/Fm) to effectively implement this project without any interruption.” he said.

He also mentioned that the boat builders had started building a new boat to start the boat service with the Sri Lanka Navy.

“We have to earn some sort of money to cover our expenses. So, we have signed a profit sharing agreement with the Sri Lanka Navy to start the boat service. The tour will be surely picturesque.”

 “We also have signed a similar type of profit sharing agreement with the Sri Lanka Police welfare unit to convert our car park premises as a commercial entertainment entity with all amenities.” he said.
