The United Kingdom has said that peace has brought many benefits to Sri Lanka and the British Government will continue to support the island nation’s reconciliation process. Issuing a statement to mark the 32nd International Day of Peace which fell on Saturday, British Deputy High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Laura Davies said the peace in Sri Lanka has brought many additional benefits, including opportunities for economic growth and political participation. Recalling that 21st September was also the first anniversary of the first Northern Provincial Council elections, the envoy said the “UK continues to support Sri Lanka in its quest to further consolidate reconciliation, democracy and human rights in the country.” “The theme of the 2014 International Day of Peace is The Right of Peoples to Peace. This recognises that the promotion of peace is vital for the full enjoyment of all human rights, including, of course, the right to life,” the Deputy High Commissioner’s statement said.
