Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne says that the people in the country have once again endorsed the policies of the current administration aimed at development.

Jayaratne has said that the governing United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) victory of 21 out of the 23 local government bodies at Saturday’s election was an endorsement given by the people to continue the development of the country.

Issuing a statement after the conclusion of the final phase of the local government elections, the Prime Minister has noted that the UPFA has managed to win the local government bodies with a clear majority and has even managed to secure power in the Kandy Municipal Council after 58 years.

He has further noted that all representatives who had been elected to the local government bodies should not resort to violence and vengeance and should instead focus on serving the people.

According to Jayaratne, the sad incident that had taken place where the UPFA was concerned was an indication of the shortcomings in the existing electoral system and the preferential votes system.
