For the next five years, the Good Governance Government will continue in office and the people of this country will benefit from the good governance of this government, President Maithripala Sirisena said.

The President was addressing the 19th National Convention of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) at Palamunai Public grounds in the Addalaichenai DS division on Saturday.

The President said neither the government nor he will give in to division of the country. “This country will be united and all communities will live as members of one family. I will look after the Muslim community and will always safeguard their rights and religious independence,” he said.

The President went on to say “a group of politicians who gathered in Colombo recently said that if they were given the power to rule the country, they would do a better job. I worked with them for a long time and know them well. I came out because I could not work or tolerate them anymore. Everyone knows the harm these people caused to our country.”

He said, “I would like to tell those who beat their chests and shout slogans claiming power that this government will rule the country, taking it up the path of progress in the five year period. I would like to tell them that we will protect the country and take it towards prosperity with the help of the global community. The countries who were our foes in the past are now our friends. But these people out of frustration are trying to portray this friendship in a negative manner.”

SLMC Leader and Urban Planning, Water Supply and Drainage Minister Rauff Hakeem presided over the convention.

President Sirisena was the chief guest while Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was the special guest.
