Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday ordered the Customs Department to release the 187 copies of India’s ‘Frontline’ Magazine containing an interview published in 1987 with late LTTE Leader Vellupullai Prabhakaran. The magazines were taken into custody earlier this month at the Airport by customs stating that republishing this article could become a threat to the country’s national security. However, Premier Wickremesinghe’s office in a statement yesterday said this particular interview would not pose any threat to national security and therefore asked the Customs to release the magazines. The Prime Minister has also advised the Customs Department to contact the Media Ministry beforehand in the future before taking action on similar cases. The article in question has been published in the ‘Frontline’, India’s National Magazine from the publishers of The Hindu, as part of a series of Asian political interviews to celebrate its 30th anniversary.
