PM’s Committee to begin seeking public opinion on constitutional reforms on Monday

The Constitution Compilation Committee appointed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to seek public opinion on the proposed constitutional reforms, will begin their function in Colombo from tomorrow.

The Constitution Compilation Committee is responsible for compiling input taken from all corners of the country covering all 25 districts, into an initial first draft for overview. Its office is located at Visumpaya in Colombo and is open to accepting public ideas and suggestions from 18 January to 31 March. Obtaining public views on constitutional reforms in the Colombo area will commence on Monday and will conclude on Wednesday. It will take place from 9.30 a.m. on Monday to 4.30 p.m. on Wednesday at the secretariat, located at Visumpaya in Colombo 2. The committee requests the public to submit a written summary when they are giving verbal views and proposals.

The 24-member committee consisting of representatives from political parties and civil societies is chaired by Attorney Lal Wijenayake and include President’s Counsel Faizer Mustapha, Professor Gamini Samaranayake and Professor AM Navaratne Bandara and M.L.A. Cader, among others.

The committee members are expected to visit across the island and seek oral and written submissions from the public. A report on the public’s opinion and recommendations will be handed to a Cabinet Sub Committee on Constitutional Reforms.
