Police fire tear gas at university students

A tense situation occurred in Colpetty yesterday when the Inter University Student Federation (IUSF) held a protest march and was met with tear gas fired by the Police. The protest was held from Sri Jayewardenepura University to Colombo where the students attempted to march towards Temple Trees, at which point Police fired tear gas and baton-charged the students. Police revealed that seven Police officers including an inspector were admitted to hospital following the attack, while two students were arrested. The protest was held in light of the Government’s failure to resolve issues in the education sector.
