There was a 120% decline in Sri Lanka’s homicides rate since 2004, police media spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said.
The number of homicides has dropped to 438 in 2014 from 1,288 in 2004, according to the police spokesman.
Commenting on the crime trend in Sri Lanka at a press briefing on Thursday, SSP Rohana stressed that there was no crime trend in the country after the war ended.
He said when compared to other countries in Asia, Europe and Africa, the crime rate in Sri Lanka had not increased.
The police had been able to eradicate the underworld in the country and had taken steps to control the drug menace as well, SSP Rohana revealed.
“We have arrested 23,218 suspects and seized some 317 kilograms of heroin in 2013. So far this year 23,140 suspects have been arrested while more than 200 kilograms of heroin has been seized,” SSP Rohana said.
However, a US State Department report ‘Sri Lanka 2014 Crime and Safety Report’ says Sri Lanka faces an elevated level of criminal activity around the country, especially within Colombo. It says that Sri Lanka has a small but ever increasing drug problem although the Government remains committed to targeting drug traffickers and implementing nationwide demand reduction programs.
