Matara Police who had thanked him for cooperating with the Police investigation into the 5 October clashes between two warring UNP groups were now seeking a warrant for his arrest, UNP Parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera charged yesterday.
Issuing a special media release, Samaraweera who is currently in Matara said he would be presenting himself to Matara courts at 9 a.m. today and that he would continue his fight against the Rajapaksa regime.
He charged that the head of a private electronic media network was involved in a sponsored witch hunt against his supporters and activists in Matara.
“In the guise of investigating a clash between UNP supporters and participants of a march in Matara on 5 October, the Matara Police led by SSP Deshabandu Tennakoon initiated a witch hunt against senior UNP activists of the district,” he said.
Samaraweera said he had personally handed in 24 members of his party on Sunday 6 October at the request of the Police even though he had photographic and video evidence to prove that they did not indulge in any violent activities during this confrontation where five people were shot.
He said Police intelligence were in possession of video footage of the club wielding thugs of the march and these videos clearly show the organisers of this march distributing clubs from a parked vehicle at the very start of this march that morning. “However, only seven of the club wielding goons have so far been arrested,” he said.
