Polls Chief appoints special team to probe election malpractices

Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said that a special team of officials has been deployed to arrest candidates who violate the election regulations and misuse public property for election propaganda.
The team will directly answer to the Election Commissioner and will probe complaints received at the District Secretary level, the Commissioner stated. He said that the step was taken under the powers vested in him through the Constitution to prevent election malpractices.
The official further stated that some State vehicles used by the Provincial Council politicians have not been transferred yet and action would be taken against those politicians and the officials. Complaints have been received that these vehicles are used for election propaganda, the Election Commissioner said.
