Election monitors have written to the mayor of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) regarding the election related posters and cut-outs which had surfaced in the city even before nominations were called for. The People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) said that it had received several complaints regarding the posters appearing all over the city. PAFFREL questioned if the posters and cut-outs had been erected in the city following the accepted procedures. The independent election monitoring group also questioned the CMC if measures have been taken to remove illegal cut-outs and posters. PAFFREL has asked the Colombo Mayor to consider providing details of the payments made or documents which prove that the cut-outs have been legally approved. Meanwhile, in a separate letter to the Elections Commissioner, PAFFREL has noted that there is an attempt to recruit staff by the ministry of sports this week.PAFFREL notes that it is illegal for recruitment, transfers or to be promoted in the Government sector after the date of an election has been announced and so it urged the Elections Commissioner to take action against the attempt by the Sports Ministry.
