Polls related violence kills opposition party supporter

Increasing election related violence has resulted in the death of a supporter of the main opposition United National Party (UNP) in the Western Province. The police said that a supporter of UNP Gampaha District PC candidate Harshana Rajakaruna died due to an alleged assault by a governing party supporter in the Dompe electorate yesterday.In another election violence incident, a governing party councillor was arrested for assaulting a supporter of a colleague in the Southern Province. Governing party candidate and former Southern Provincial Council (SPC) Minister D.V. Upul was arrested by the Beliatta Police for allegedly assaulting supporters of another governing party candidate in Medagoda, Beliatta. The Police said five supporters of governing party candidate M.K. Kasun were injured during an assault and were admitted to the Beliatta and Tangalle Hospitals. Meanwhile, the Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya has sought the assistance of Inspector General of Police (IGP), N.K. Ilangakoon, to curb election violence in the two provinces that will hold polls on 29 March.
