Trade unions affiliated to the postal sector in Sri Lanka have warned of re-commencing strike action if the authorities fail to address the demand for the removal of the Post Master General by the end of the year.
The Joint Postal Trade Union says that the workers agreed to stop the trade union action agreeing to the assurance given by the Post Minister and the Post Ministry Secretary.
Spokesperson of the Trade Union, Chinthaka Bandara has said that the Minister and the Ministry Secretary therefore needed to honour their pledge.
The postal service’s trade unions commenced a work strike on November 14 calling for the immediate removal of the Post master General who has been accused of massive corruption.
The week-long strike crippled the country’s postal service with over 1.8 million pieces of mail accumulating at the central mail exchange.
The unions resumed work a week later following the discussions with the Minister of Postal Services, Jeewan Kumaratunga.
Post Ministry Secretary Hemasiri Fernando has noted that a proper inquiry would be held into the Post Master General since the charge sheet against him has been handed over to the Public Administration Secretary.
