President asks local government leaders to respect public

President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Wednesday asked the ruling party leaders of local governments to respect the public and safeguard the dignity of the party as an increasing number of ruling party politicians of local governments are found to be involved in flouting country’s laws. Speaking to the ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) leaders of local government bodies at a meeting in the President’s office Wednesday, the President said as publicly elected officials, local government politicians should work respecting the public. The public representatives should not only work for the party itself but also for the people, he stressed. The President asked young politicians to involve in politics while safeguarding their dignity. The meeting was summoned following a decision taken by the central committee of the SLFP at its meeting held on 19 July to take a decision on local government politicians allegedly engaging in various crimes and to discuss array of issues including taking action against such local politicians and preventing reoccurrence of such incidents. All 254 leaders of ruling party local governments including all Municipal Councils, Urban Councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas were present at the meeting.
