President concerned with escalating global terrorism

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday expressed concern over the escalating terrorism in the world, following the shooting at Canada’s Parliament. The President in a Twitter message said it is “very disturbing to see increasing terrorist acts in many countries, now even in Canada,” and called on the countries to unite in fighting terrorism. “We must unite as equal partners to fight this menace,” the President added. A gunman on Wednesday shot and killed a soldier at an Ottawa war memorial, before dying in a shootout with Police inside the Canadian Parliament. Sri Lanka ended a brutal three-decade war with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in 2009. However, since then the Government has come under fire for its human rights record and allegations of war crimes committed during the last phase of the conflict. Canada in particular has been staunchly critical of President Rajapaksa’s Government and backed a resolution earlier this year along with the USand Britain at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to appoint an international investigation panel into Sri Lanka’s rights record.
