President congratulates first Muslim Mayor of London

President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday congratulated new Mayor of London Sadiq Khan on his victory.

"Congratulations to the new Mayor of London @SadiqKhan," the Sri Lankan President said in a Twitter message.

Sadiq Khan of the Labour Party is the first Muslim to become the Mayor of London winning the mayoral election, beating Conservative rival Zac Goldsmith with 56.8 % of the votes.

Khan, son of a Pakistani bus driver who immigrated to the UK, has become the first Muslim mayor of any capital city in the EU, according to BBC. He was sworn in as London mayor at Southwark Cathedral in London.
