President pledges to provide speedy solutions to Mahaweli Ministry employees’ issues

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday pledged to appoint six subcommittees to look into the issues faced by the employees of the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment, which is under the President’s purview.

The President, who is the Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment, met with trade union representatives of the Ministry yesterday at the Mahaweli Authority.

During the discussion, the trade union representatives enlightened the President on several issues faced by employees, including promotions and salaries.

Commending the trade union representatives for seeking solutions to their problems through discussion, President Sirisena said he is committed to looking into the demands of all trade unions regardless of party politics.

The President pledged to appoint six sub-committees to provide speedy solutions for employees’ problems. The subcommittees will be monitored by an additional secretary of the Presidential Secretariat, an additional secretary of the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment as well as an additional secretary of the Ministry of National Integration and Reconciliation, which also falls under the purview of the President.

President Sirisena said a satisfactory environment should be created for employees to get the maximum output from them and assured that every justifiable demand will be met within the next few months. He added that the buildings of the Ministry that are in dilapidated condition will be renovated as soon as possible.

A discussion was also held between the officials of the Mahaweli Development Authority and the President. The discussion focused on the present activities and the future plans of the institute.

Deputy Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment Anuradha Jayaratne, Secretary to the Ministry Udaya R. Seneviratne and Director General of the Mahaweli Development Authority Anura Dissanayake also participated in the discussions.
