President Mahinda Rajapaksa has said that a service constitution would be introduced to streamline Sri Lanka’s police service in the future. The measure is expected to resolve issues related to promotions, salary increments and training opportunities. Addressing a meeting of police officers at the Temple Trees Saturday, the President assured that he will never allow the diminishing of the police service, which protects law and order in the country. More than 5,000 police and special task force (STF) officers representing all areas of the island attended the meeting organised under the theme ‘The progress of Sri Lanka Police during last 10 years’. The President recognising that many police officers have sacrificed their lives since the inception of the Police Department in 1805 recalled the massacre of 600 police officers by LTTE terrorists. “We built a country which will not pave the way for such betrayals again,” the President assured. He said the ‘Mahinda Chintana’ policy clearly states that the police department would not be devalued and next year’s budget has proposed to create a service constitution for police. The President noted that the tasks of the police department at present are different from those in the past as they have to engage in a wide range of work and different types of crimes. He said the Government has strengthened the police service to meet these challenges by providing new technology and methodologies. He pointed out the need for the police to be more knowledgeable to be one step ahead of the criminals in order to beat them and said the training should be provided to all sectors of the police. Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga, Secretary to the Law and Order Ministry Mahinda Balasuriya, IGP N.K. Ilangakoon and a group of officials were present at the meeting.
