President runs marathon to promote energy conservation

President Maithripala Sirisena on Saturday launched a special marathon organised under the energy conversation program introduced with the declaration of National Energy Conservation Month.

President Sirisena started the special marathon titled ‘Jawana Shakthi Yaathra’ at the Independence Square in Colombo after reading out a pledge to conserve energy and releasing around 5,000 balloons, which display the pledge.

The President also joined the marathon, carrying the message of ‘Conservation of Energy for the Future’.

Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka, Commanders of the Army and Navy and officers from the military services as well as employees of the Power and Energy Ministry joined the marathon, which included over 5,000 people. Minister Ranawaka completed the full marathon.

A walk also commenced from the Independence Square covering a distance of four km before reaching its destination at the Independence Square again.

This Power and Energy Ministry organised the event to encourage the public to conserve fuel and electricity as much as possible.

Newly-elected chairman of the Athletic Association Sugath Thilakaratne was appointed as the Brand Ambassador of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation to carry this message to the public.
