President Mahinda Rajapaksa pledged to allay tensions between Eastern Province Governor Rear Admiral Mohan Wijewickrema and ruling party provincial councillors in the Eastern Provincial Council following a meeting in Kandy on Saturday, Daily FT learns. The Council has not held sessions twice already with UPFA councillors citing interference by the Governor in Council matters. President Rajapaksa who summoned the EPC ruling party councillors for talks in Kandy, said that disruptions in the work of the EPC could adversely impact Government plans to constitute the Northern Provincial Council and the preceding election, Council sources said. He assured the EPC councillors that he would address the issues with Rear Admiral Wijewickrema and resolve the problem. Accordingly the EPC will now convene on schedule again, the sources said. There was no discussion on the 13th Amendment during the meeting on Saturday, Daily FT learns. The Eastern Provincial Council is yet to sanction the Government’s proposed revisions to the 13th Amendment. Ruling party constituents in the EPC, the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and the TMVP are opposed to making changes to the Amendment. Also present at the meeting in Kandy were Ministers Susil Premajayanth and A.L.M. Athaullah.
