President wants a mandate to create a moral society

President Mahinda Rajapaksa says that he came forward to contest for a third time seeking a mandate to create a moral and disciplined society.
Addressing the ruling party’s second public rally in Nawalapitiya Sunday, the President said he wanted a moral community that would help him achieve his vision of a strong and developed future for the people of this country.
“In 2005 when I took over as the President of the country, the people wanted one thing, to end the war. We were able to deliver on that promise. Now developments are underway, mainly infrastructure,” the President said.
The President said that the country could not be developed by thinking only about politics, noting that roads, schools and hospitals have been modernised, infrastructure has been developed and 98% of households have been given electricity.
He promised to supply everyone in the country with electricity and also establish the facilities needed for Government Ministers to smoothly run their operations.
Promising to develop the infrastructure in the least-developed plantation country, the President said in the future people should be able to travel from Nawalapitiya to Colombo within one hour and 15 minutes.
Speaking further, the President said he was able to provide 70% of the population with pipe-borne water and plans are underway to provide 100%.
“The City of Colombo has gone through a significant facelift and the tourism is being improved throughout the country as the country itself is changing,” he said.
The President said that he wanted to see a society which moved forward with the times and children who could compete in the global arena.
