President’s Secretary to meet UNHRC High Commissioner

Anticipating serious pressure from the international community at the upcoming United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) session in Geneva, the Sri Lankan Government is sending its top civil servant to Geneva later this month to meet the chief human rights official of the UN.
Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga will leave for Geneva later this month to meet the High Commissioner of UNHRC Navanetham Pillai, government sources said.
The meeting between Weeratunga and the UNHRC High Commissioner is scheduled to take place in the third week of January, according to government sources.
At the discussion, the President’s Secretary is expected to explain to the High Commissioner the actions Sri Lanka has already taken and future actions to be taken regarding the resolutions passed at the UNHRC in the past two years.
Weeratunga, who heads the task force appointed to implement the recommendations of the domestic body Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC), is expected to inform the UNHRC High Commissioner that the government may not be able to implement some recommendations of the LLRC. Those recommendations include the sensitive factors such as granting a political settlement to the ethnic problem, devolution of land and police powers and bringing laws for the safety of the witnesses etc.
