Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says the full support of civil society leaders and activists is needed for the unity government formed a year ago to fulfill its mandate to the people.

Meeting with leading civil society activists Thursday night at Temple Trees, Wickremesinghe said the Government is committed to honour the people’s mandate.

“As a government, our duty is the commitment according to the mandate given by the citizens of Sri Lanka on the 08 January and 17 August. A duty to control the direction of the country, so as to honour the people’s mandate,” he said in his official Facebook page.

“For this to be successful, we, the Government, require the full support, intervention and cooperation of civil society activists,” he noted.

Wickremesinghe further said that the activists had observed that the persecution and repressive situation they had endured during the previous regime had ended and a new era had dawned strengthening democracy and empowering civil society. The process of reconciliation and reconstruction was already underway, they had added.
