The Gampaha High Court yesterday handed the death penalty to the chief suspect in the murder of Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha member Hasitha Kelum Madawala.
The court also sentenced the second accused Ashen Chaturanga to five years of rigorous imprisonment.
The 32-year-old councillor was fatally shot in front of his residence in Waragoda, Kelaniya by two assailants on a motorcycle on 5 January 2013.
