Prof. Warnapala new UPFA General Secretary

Following the resignation of the General Secretary of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), MP Susil Premajayantha, from his post, Prof. Vishwa Warnapala, who was functioning as the Acting General Secretary, officially assumed the role at the SLFP headquarters in Colombo yesterday.

Premajayantha tendered his resignation to UPFA leader, President Maithripala Sirisena, on Tuesday.

The Colombo District Court on 14 August issued an enjoining order preventing Premajayantha from holding the post and the President appointed Prof. Warnapala as the Acting General Secretary.

Premajayantha previously refused to acknowledge the order, saying that the UPFA Executive Committee had to approve his removal.

However, yesterday Premajayantha said he had decided to step down but added that he would continue to be engaged in political activities as a member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).
