The Government has taken action to initiate the conservation of the Kelani River Basin. Accordingly, the Ministry of Environment and Renewable Energy, with contribution of a number of establishments including the Central Environment Authority has crafted a special program for the conservation.
The introduction of this program took place at the Kelani Raja Maha Vihara recently. It was organised under the patronage of Minister of Environment and Renewable Energy Susil Premajayantha.
Minister Premajayantha said the water of this river was being polluted by human activities on one side of the river and it has a serious impact on the population within the City of Colombo and the suburbs as well as on the people living on the other side of the river. He said the ministry planned to protect the river banks and its cleanliness by educating the public and soliciting their contribution.
Of the five main rivers in Sri Lanka, the drinking water need of a highest number is met by the Kelani River. This river can also be considered the leading contributor of the professions of the people living adjacent to the river. Inland fisheries, power generation, agriculture, the sand clay and pot industries and transport are among the many activities that are taking place with the river being used as the base.
