A series of protests are being held in opposition to the forces conspiring in the UN Human Rights Council against Sri Lanka in Geneva. Thousands of Sri Lankans living in Italy gathered at the Central Railway Station in Milan on 16 March to protest against the US-sponsored resolution on Sri Lanka submitted at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC). More than 2,000 people, who had come from across Italy by bus and train, marched through Milan city centre and crowded into the square of the Central Railway Station. They waved Sri Lankan and Italian national flags, posters and banners against outside interference on Sri Lanka and also demanded that powerful countries in the world stop promoting terrorism. The Sri Lankans in Italy also made an appeal to the Italian Government to support Sri Lanka against the US-led resolution at the UN Human Rights Council. Sri Lankan organisations in France will organise a massive protest at the Concord, near the Eiffel Tower in Paris on Wednesday (19 March). All the Sri Lankan expatriate associations have joined hands to organise this event. After holding demonstrations in many European capitals, the expatriate community is scheduled to meet in Geneva later this week to organise a massive protest in front of the UNHRC in Geneva. Meanwhile, another peaceful protest was held at Kataragama on 16 March, organised by the Yahapalana Sansadaya and Sangamitha Foundation. An Adhishtana Pooja also was held at Kirivehera sacred premises in Kataragama to invoke blessings on Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva. Protests also were held in Kalmuani and Ampara on 9 and 14 March respectively, while the National Rights Organisation (NRO), comprising a multi-religious membership, also submitted a letter of protest against the US-sponsored resolution on Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on 4 March.
