Provincial MP surrenders to police over the attack on artistes

A ruling party provincial council MP who is alleged of leading an attack on a group of artistes in Kumbukgate, Kurunegala has surrendered to the Gokerella Police through his lawyer. UPFA North Western Provincial Councillor Don Kamal Indika was alleged of leading a group of party supporters to attack the artists of ‘Yowun Parapura’ who were taking part in a street concert in support of the common Opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena. According to the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) youth artistes such as Samanalee Fonseka, Jagath Manuwarna, Indrachapa Liyanage, Lakshman Wijesekara and Udaya Dharmawardhana were performing when the attack took place at about 12:30 p.m. on Monday (29). The group of UPFA supporters headed by the UPFA Provincial Councilor had thrown rocks at the artistes. Samanalee Fonseka and Udaya Dharmawardhana had been stoned while Lakshman Wijesekara had been kicked, the CMEV reported. Several artistes have sustained injuries in the attack. Artistes Samanalee Fonseka and Indrachapa Liyanage and few others have been admitted to the hospital. The Provincial MP will be produced before the courts after recording a statement, Gokerella Police said.
