The Parliament Select Committee (PSC) is ready to consider proposals to abolish the Executive Presidency or amend its powers, the Government said yesterday.
Head of the committee, Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva told reporters at a media briefing that the opposition can place its proposals on the Executive Presidency if it so wishes to do so.
The Minister said that the PSC will meet soon and the opposition is still welcome to attend the meeting to discuss the concerns it has and the proposals it has.
“The select committee is already there. It is the Opposition which has missed the bus. Still they can come and get into the bus,” he said.
The Minister said that the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) also must join the PSC if it wants to address the concerns it has and not seek foreign intervention.
Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe, who also attended the same press briefing, said that the Opposition has a responsibility to take part in the PSC and put forward its proposals.
He noted that the PSC is not led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa and is an independent committee created for the purpose of addressing issues like that now raised by the Opposition on the Executive Presidency. (Colombo Gazette)
