Public Administration Min. defends high traffic fines

Public Administration and Management Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara yesterday defended the Finance Ministry’s decision to increase the traffic offences fine up to Rs.25,000, claiming that it could reduce the number of accidents in future.

He said that any vehicle driver should be responsible for their own discipline when driving and the proposed fine will keep them in check.

When reporters argued that the fines are too high for low income earners that drive light vehicles, Bandara said that no one needs to bother about the fine if they are obeying road rules correctly.

The Minister also said that the increase was made only to prevent accidents and traffic offenses and not to earn money to the Government as some civil societies have alleged.
