Public Health Inspectors of Sri Lanka on strike amid a dengue outbreak

Sri Lanka Association of Public Health Inspectors has decided to walk away from their duties from today in protest of Government’s failure to grant their demands. The public health inspectors (PHIs) say that they will not participate in the meetings of the Department of Health and will not provide the reports to the Department.

They have decided to report sick from June 27 as a protest action. The PHIs have taken this trade union action at a time the country is affected by a severe dengue outbreak and the Ministry of Health has called an emergency meeting to discuss measures to curb the rising dengue cases.

The PHIs demand the Government to raise their transport allowance, office rent and uniform allowance. They demand Rs. 15,000 for uniform allowance, Rs. 7,500 for fuel allowance and Rs. 2,500 maximum office allowance.
